Is an NTP Server Good Enough for High Frequency Trading?

Network Time Protocol (NTP) has long been used as the standard for time measurement in computer systems and is included with most operating systems, including Linux, most forms of UNIX and the various Windows operating systems.

But using an NTP server for time measurement in high frequency trading systems is problematic, because it is not accurate enough to measure latency at the microsecond level required by such applications.

For this reason, high frequency trading firms are increasingly using Precision Time Protocol (PTP) as the new standard for time measurement. This protocol gives accuracy to 20 nanoseconds (billionths of a second), so it is a much better protocol for accurately measuring latency in a high frequency trading environment.

PTP, which uses a different method of clock synchronization than NTP in that it uses time stamp units (TSUs) of master and slave clocks, is based upon the IEEE 1588 standard that was developed in 2002.

This offsets any upfront saving for vinyl siding. Over their lifespan, both products will end up with similar costs.

The Samsung Charge Launches April 7

Verizon is releasing an onslaught of smartphones this spring and summer and they are continuing this with the Samsung Droid Charge that will be available in early April. The Droid Charge is another 4.3″ screen phone with a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. It is very similar to the LG Revolution, HTC Thunderbolt and Droid Bionic among others. Buying the Droid Charge will be a good deal because of all the competition just within the Verizon network of available phones. The Droid Charge has a unique look to it and while the specs are great they’re not the best so this phone will probably be available at a steep discount soon after the launch.

What sets the Droid Charge apart is the Super AMOLED Plus screen that is brighter than any other screen available and also crisper. It also has four physical buttons across the bottom of the screen for quick access to home, options and the search box.
