I recently purchased a new house in Tacoma, Washington and have been looking for a piece of art to furnish it with. From landscape canvas prints to modern art prints, I wanted some art in my house. It’s just that, I can’t look away from train graffiti, so I guess that qualifies as a fascination. I usually encounter it while driving in my car and seeing a train pass by. What never ceases to amaze me is that you will never NOT see graffiti on every single train, if not on every car, on many of them. It’s like baracles on a whale. Why this persistence? Why this effort? Also, it seems that those fat, curvy shadowed letters are a mandatory aspect of train graffiti. Again, I wonder why? Why this stylistic motif? Why is seemingly obligatory and mandatory? There is some aspect of train graffiti I do like. It’s a relatively benign form of rebellious expression — a way to “stick it to the man” without being unduly destructive. I also imagine that the graffiti artist must take pleasure in the fact that his or her “art” will travel all over the United States, and maybe even into Mexico and Canada. A moving canvass, fleeting in passing, and impossible to ignore. Yes. Yes, I guess that is art.
