After living in a country where many of the people can’t read, I have seen first hand what it does for a person when they learn to read. I taught a literacy class to children who were not able to go to school because their parents could not afford the required uniforms. The looks on those little faces when they began putting letters together to form syllables, and syllables together to form words was well worth all the time, effort, and cost involved in teaching them. The future employment that is made available just because they can read makes such a huge difference in their lives.
Give your child the gift of reading. Even if you can’t afford much, there are many cheap children’s books available and your child needs them. Read with them and to them. Listen to them read to you. Talk about the stories. Ask questions. Make it fun and interesting. Make sure they learn well. We live in a blessed country, and we must not take it lightly. Being able to read is a great privilege.
