There is really no true known cause on why women develop this BV infection. There could be many things that overtake the good bacteria and allow the bad to take over and cause the problem. Once the balance is gone between those two, treatment is necessary to restore it. Although sexually active women are the likely candidates in catching this, virgins and women not sexually active can also contract BV.
Some women who experience this have no symptoms at all and may not realize they have the infection. And, others may only develop one or two of the varying symptoms to signal a problem. Some of the most common systems of BV are an increase in vaginal discharge or a discharge that is white or gray in color. A strong fishy or musky odor from the vagina is another sign, and may be strongest after intercourse. Itching, burning and pain in the vaginal area may also indicate a problem.
